The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected across several parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday, cautioning residents in northern and central states to brace for possible flash floods.

In its latest forecast released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted early morning thunderstorms and moderate rains in Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina on Monday, with Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba expected to experience downpours later in the day.

“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” the agency stated.

Central states including Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Nasarawa will see cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall, with NiMet highlighting a high risk of flooding in parts of Plateau State.

In the southern region, light to moderate rainfall is expected across Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

On Tuesday, northern states will experience a mix of sunshine and clouds, while thunderstorms and rain will persist in Adamawa, Taraba, and surrounding areas. “Central and southern regions will continue to record moderate rainfall,” the report added.

By Wednesday, northern states are expected to witness sunshine followed by isolated thunderstorms, while central states will remain cloudy with moderate rain. Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River are projected to see early morning showers with heavier rainfall later in the day.

NiMet urged residents in flood-prone communities to take precautionary measures, avoid driving during heavy rain, and secure loose items against strong winds. The agency also advised against seeking shelter under trees during storms and recommended disconnecting electrical appliances when lightning occurs.

Airlines were advised to obtain updated, airport-specific weather information for safe flight operations. NiMet said more detailed forecasts and safety updates could be accessed on its official website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
