NNPP Challenges INEC Over Court Order
In Abuja, the New Nigeria Peoples Party has raised concerns over the refusal of Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise its leadership despite a court ruling.
The party sent a fresh letter dated April 13, 2026, seeking compliance and dialogue. It said the matter has dragged on for weeks without action. The situation has stirred fresh tension within the party.
The dispute stems from a Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment delivered in March, which directed compliance within 72 hours.
The party said it had earlier notified INEC of the ruling but received no reply. It added that more than three weeks later, there has been no update. This delay, it noted, has deepened uncertainty around its leadership structure.
The party expressed worry over what it described as selective recognition, pointing to recent defections involving Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.
It argued that individuals who had left the party were still being treated as valid representatives.
According to the NNPP, such actions go against court decisions and weaken trust in due process. It warned that ignoring valid rulings could harm the rule of law.
To resolve the crisis, the party has requested a meeting with the commission to find a way forward. It maintained that court judgments remain binding until overturned by a higher court.
The NNPP also cautioned that continued delay may affect its supporters in future elections. It expressed hope that dialogue would bring a quick and fair resolution.
