Obi Raises Alarm Over Cancelled University Talks
In Nigeria, Peter Obi has raised concern over repeated cancellations of his university events. He spoke on Saturday after a planned lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University was called off.
The incident happened just hours before he was due to speak. It added to a growing list of similar cases.
He said the cancelled lecture was part of a schedule that included another political event in Ibadan later that day. According to him, the decision to cancel came shortly before the programme.
He noted that this was not the first time such a situation had occurred. The pattern, he said, is becoming more frequent.
Obi said similar cancellations have happened more than ten times across different institutions. He added that even University of Nigeria Nsukka once cancelled a lecture linked to him on the day it was meant to hold.
He compared this with his experience abroad, where he has spoken freely at several universities. He said those systems allow open discussion.
He warned that repeated disruptions could affect intellectual freedom in Nigeria’s universities. He said spaces meant for learning and debate should remain open.
He added that national growth depends on free exchange of ideas. He called for a system where knowledge can be shared without fear.
