Oshiomhole Calls For Resignation Of Akpabio
Senator Adams Oshiomhole on Thursday called for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the controversial amendment to the Senate Standing Orders.
The Edo North lawmaker said the new rules created a “moral crisis” within the upper chamber. The disagreement has further deepened tensions among senators ahead of the 2027 political season.
Oshiomhole argued that the amended rules unfairly reduced the number of senators eligible to contest for top leadership positions.
He maintained that Akpabio himself would not fully meet the conditions being proposed if they were strictly applied.
The former Edo governor also faulted attempts to alter Senate rules after some leaders had already benefited from previous arrangements.
The crisis followed the Senate’s decision to introduce stricter conditions for senators seeking principal offices in the 11th National Assembly.
Under the new rules, only lawmakers with at least two uninterrupted terms would qualify for major leadership positions.
The move sparked criticism from senators who believed the process was rushed to favour certain political interests.
The Senate later reversed parts of the amendment after concerns emerged over possible conflicts with the 1999 Constitution. Senate leaders defended the decision, insisting the adjustments were made to avoid legal disputes.
The controversy has now drawn fresh attention to the growing battle for control of the Senate ahead of 2027.
