Police Officer Detained For Shooting Colleagues
Shock spread through Rivers State on Sunday after a police inspector allegedly opened fire on two of his colleagues during an afternoon duty at a busy supermarket in Port Harcourt, leaving one officer dead and another battling injuries.
The shooting happened at Next Cash and Carry in the Trans-Amadi area, where officers from the Police Mobile Force were working alongside military personnel.
The suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, was said to be part of the security arrangement when the incident occurred.
Police authorities confirmed that the victims, Inspectors Ibrahim Sani and Daniel Dauda, were struck in the head and neck. They were rushed to hospital, but Sani later died from his injuries, while Dauda remains under medical care.
Following the incident, the Rivers State Police Command took Okus into custody and began internal disciplinary procedures. The command said he would face an orderly room trial before being charged in court, as investigations continue into what led to the shooting.
The Commissioner of Police in the state has ordered a full and open probe, warning officers to treat firearm handling with utmost care. The command also expressed sympathy with the family of the deceased officer and pledged to ensure accountability within the force.
