The Federal Government has approved three major policies to transform Nigeria’s civil service and drive better performance across ministries and agencies.
The newly approved policies are the Rewards and Recognition Policy, the Incentive and Consequence Management Policy, and the Civil Service Mentoring Policy.
President Bola Tinubu approved this at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, signalling a new phase of productivity, accountability, and career growth in the nation’s civil service.
According to a statement from Mrs Eno Olotu, Director of Information and Public Relations, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, said the reforms are designed to improve staff welfare, align with the 2021 Public Service Rules, and enhance efficiency across the system.
She commended the President for his vision to build a civil service that is effective, transparent, and citizen-focused. Walson-Jack noted that the policies will help reward hard work, strengthen accountability, and prepare a new generation of leaders for the future.
The Rewards and Recognition Policy aims to attract, nurture, and retain top-performing workers by promoting excellence, innovation, and consistent improvement across all departments.
The Incentive and Consequence Management Policy establishes a fair and transparent framework where good performance is rewarded while underperformance is addressed through proper corrective measures — ensuring fairness and accountability.
Meanwhile, the Civil Service Mentoring Policy focuses on knowledge transfer and leadership development, preparing younger officers to take on senior roles and maintain institutional continuity even as older officers retire.
Walson-Jack described the approval as a major step toward creating a modern, dynamic, and result-driven civil service, assuring workers that their commitment and dedication will now be more visibly recognised and rewarded.
