President Bola Tinubu has praised Lagos State for making history as the first African city to host the E1 Electric Powerboat Championship, calling it a groundbreaking moment for clean energy and marine innovation.

In a goodwill message delivered on Friday through the Lagos State Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Tinubu congratulated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the organisers for successfully bringing the international event to Nigeria.

“This championship is not merely a thrilling spectacle on water but a statement of intent,” Tinubu said. “The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation, showcasing electric-powered vessels that point the way to a greener and more sustainable future.”

The President said the event aligns with his administration’s vision for developing the blue economy, noting that investments in renewable energy, marine tourism, and coastal infrastructure would create jobs, empower the youth, and boost Nigeria’s global standing.

Proudly referring to himself as a Lagosian, Tinubu described the state as an ideal host for the historic event. “Lagos, the cultural capital of Nigeria, the heartbeat of our economy, and a symbol of our resilience, is the perfect host. Its vibrant waterways and dynamic people embody the spirit of competition, creativity, and hospitality,” he said.

The opening ceremony, held at the Lagos Boat Club in Ikoyi, featured a regatta led by Governor Sanwo-Olu and test runs by participating teams. The governor said hosting the E1 Lagos GP was about more than sports—it was a showcase of Lagos’ energy, creativity, and commitment to sustainability.

“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism — the Spirit of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.
