FG Tightens Rules On Honorary Degrees
The Federal Government has introduced a new rule stopping universities without active Ph.D programmes from awarding honorary doctorate degrees.
The policy is aimed at tightening standards in higher education and improving credibility in the use of academic titles across the country.
The decision affects institutions that do not currently run postgraduate research programmes leading to doctoral degrees.
Authorities say such schools will no longer be allowed to confer honorary doctorates until they meet the required academic benchmarks.
Education regulators explained that the move is part of efforts to protect the value of academic awards and reduce misuse of honorary titles.
They added that only institutions with strong research structures and approved Ph.D programmes will qualify under the new rule.
The government also said it will continue monitoring universities to ensure compliance, warning that sanctions will follow any breach of the directive.
The policy is expected to reshape how honorary degrees are awarded in the country.
