Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his order for the withdrawal of police officers assigned to federal lawmakers, citing concerns over their safety.

The directive, issued on November 23, required the immediate removal of police protection for very important personalities (VIPs) nationwide. By November 26, several lawmakers had expressed fears that the move left them vulnerable to security risks.

During the joint sitting of the National Assembly on Friday, where the 2026 appropriation bill was presented, Akpabio conveyed these concerns, noting that some legislators might be unable to return home safely.

“As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some members have asked me to inform you that they may not be able to go home today because of this change,” he said. “We plead with you, Mr President, for a review of the decision.”

Akpabio also welcomed President Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and members of the Federal Executive Council to the chamber, describing the National Assembly as the foundation of the president’s public service journey.

He emphasized that collaboration between the executive and legislature is crucial for national progress, rejecting claims that such cooperation undermines legislative independence. He described the 2026 appropriation bill as a roadmap for Nigeria’s next phase of development.

“Over the past year, our country has navigated significant challenges. Insecurity has tested our collective resolve, reminding us that peace is a responsibility we must continually defend,” Akpabio said.

He highlighted that the 2025 budget required difficult but necessary reforms to prioritize long-term national interests. Akpabio also pointed to the 10th Senate’s legislative achievements, including bills on security, economic reform, governance, judicial administration, electoral integrity, infrastructure, and social protection, all aimed at strengthening institutions and supporting security agencies.
