Sowore’s Prison Remand Is Dangerous For Democracy – Obi
Peter Obi has criticised the decision to remand activist Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Correctional Centre, saying it raises concerns for Nigeria’s democratic system.
He called for stronger protection of civil freedoms and respect for constitutional rights.
The former Anambra State governor said the court ruling sends a worrying signal at a time when the country is already facing security and economic pressure.
He urged institutions of state to avoid actions that could deepen public tension.
Obi argued that democracy depends on the protection of free speech, peaceful protest and open civic participation.
He warned that treating critics and activists as threats weakens accountability and could push the country towards authoritarian tendencies.
He called on authorities to ensure that Sowore’s rights are protected throughout the legal process and stressed that justice must remain fair and independent for democracy to remain stable.
