Defections Shake Reps Ahead Of 2027
Six lawmakers in the House of Representatives have dumped the New Nigeria Peoples Party and Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress and African Democratic Congress.
The moves were announced during plenary presided over by Tajudeen Abbas. The development reflects rising political shifts as the 2027 elections draw closer.
Four lawmakers from Kano left the NNPP for the ADC, citing internal crises and divisions within their former party.
One of them, Adamu Wakili, said ongoing leadership disputes made it difficult to remain. Others pointed to similar issues at both state and national levels.
In a separate move, two lawmakers from the PDP defected to the APC, including Ahmadu Kabiru and Chinedu Martins.
They cited political disagreements and alignment with the ruling party’s direction. The APC now holds a strong majority in the chamber, while opposition numbers continue to shrink.
The latest defections add to a growing trend of political realignment across parties. Analysts link the shifts to internal disputes, search for stability, and positioning ahead of the next election cycle.
More changes are expected as lawmakers continue to rethink their political future.
