Falana Drags Senate To Court Over N210tn NNPCL Report
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an order compelling the Senate to release the report of its Public Accounts Committee on alleged N210 trillion discrepancies in the audited accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited between 2017 and 2023.
The case was brought under the Freedom of Information Act and judicial review provisions.
Falana said he requested the report in March 2026 after the Senate committee reportedly raised concerns over transactions and financial entries it described as unexplained or unsupported in NNPCL’s records.
According to the suit, the Senate received the request but did not provide the documents or give reasons for withholding them.
The senior advocate argued that the refusal to release the report violates both the Freedom of Information Act and constitutional provisions guaranteeing access to information.
He maintained that Nigerians have a right to know the outcome of investigations involving public funds and one of the country’s most important state-owned institutions.
In the suit, Falana is asking the court to declare the Senate’s action unlawful and issue an order directing the immediate release of the report to him and the public. No hearing date has been fixed for the matter.
