A suicide bomber attacked a military convoy in the Timbuktu triangle area of Borno State, killing five soldiers and injuring several others, according to security sources. Among the casualties were two senior officers—a major and a lieutenant.
The troops were returning from a clearance operation that successfully dismantled multiple insurgent camps and neutralized several militants when the attack occurred. A soldier at the scene said the explosion caused extensive damage to military equipment used during the weeks-long operations.
An officer who spoke on condition of anonymity added, “Every operation has its challenges, but we overcame them. Sadly, five of our soldiers were lost. Manga is safe, and the operation continues. Armoured and logistics vehicles were destroyed when a van loaded with explosives rammed the convoy on Tuesday.”
The bodies of the deceased soldiers have been flown to Maiduguri, while the injured are receiving treatment.
The Timbuktu triangle is notorious for attacks on military personnel, including the previous ambush and execution of Brigadier General Musa Uba.
Earlier on Monday, troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, reported clearing several terrorist camps and thwarting drone attacks in the area.
