Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji has defended Igbo women after a social media user advised Igbo men to marry East African women instead.
The debate started following a tweet about an Enugu woman who allegedly accused her husband of raping two children. The user wrote: “This is what am talking about! Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying Igbo woman that’ll falsely accuse you of raping your daughter, better look outside for wife. Go to East Africa, especially this Rwanda and pick a damsel. They’re all over social media and you can link up with them.”
Genevieve replied: “In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it.”
When another user challenged her, saying the original tweet targeted false accusers rather than Igbo women in general, Genevieve clarified: “The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women’.”
Her comments have sparked discussions online about accountability, gender, and cultural generalizations, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding social issues in Nigeria and the need to avoid sweeping assumptions about any group.
