Gwarzo Drops Court Case Over Impeachment
A Federal High Court in Kano has ended a legal challenge filed by former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo after he chose to withdraw the case.
The suit had sought to stop impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly. Justice S.M. Shuaibu struck out the matter on Thursday following the sudden decision.
The case was discontinued after Gwarzo’s lawyer, Umar Danbaito, informed the court that his client no longer wished to pursue it.
This move effectively brought an end to the legal attempt to halt the lawmakers’ action. The former deputy governor had earlier approached the court to challenge the legality of the impeachment process.
Gwarzo had filed the suit on March 25, asking the court to restrain the Assembly from continuing proceedings that began on March 5.
The court, however, declined to issue an interim order stopping the process. Instead, it directed that the Assembly be notified and adjourned the matter to April 16 before the withdrawal.
The impeachment process has been linked to political shifts in the state, including Gwarzo’s reported refusal to defect from the NNPP to the APC.
Lawmakers said the move followed constitutional provisions, with 38 members backing the notice. He is also facing allegations of receiving kickbacks from local government councils.
