Igbo Leaders Raise Alarm Over Nnamdi Kanu Detention
Igbo Leaders of Thought have criticised the life imprisonment of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu following his 2025 conviction in Abuja on terrorism-related charges.
The group says his continued detention in Sokoto prison after appeal raises concern among stakeholders in the South-East.
They raised the issue during a meeting with Nzuko Ozo Ndigbo representatives. The leaders also pointed to long-standing tensions over how the region is treated.
The group linked Kanu’s case to what they described as a long history of unfair treatment of the Igbo people, tracing grievances back to the civil war era.
They argued that post-war reconciliation efforts were not fully implemented and that recovery in the region has remained uneven.
The leaders also referenced past international reactions during the war period. They maintained that the impact of those events is still felt today.
They further raised concerns about present-day issues, including alleged destruction of properties owned by Igbo people in parts of Lagos and exclusion from key national projects.
Attention was also drawn to infrastructure decisions such as major road projects, which they believe do not fairly reflect regional balance.
These concerns, they said, deepen feelings of exclusion among citizens from the South-East. The group urged a more balanced national approach to development.
The leaders also called for a return to traditional values through stronger use of the Ozo institution as a guide for moral and community leadership.
They said restoring cultural systems could help address social and political challenges in the region.
While noting political participation across parties by Igbo businessmen, they said pressure influences such alignments.
The group expressed hope that future generations would push for fairness and stronger unity.
