IGP Disbands Special Police Unit
In Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has dismantled the Special Investigation Unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
The directive also ordered the redeployment of officers linked to the former monitoring unit head, Akin Fakorede.
The move forms part of a wider restructuring within the force. It affects dozens of personnel across the unit.
About 88 officers attached to the IGP Monitoring Unit have been removed and transferred. The restructuring will see the unit reconstituted under a new leadership.
Aliyu Abubakar has been assigned to head the revamped structure. The changes are aimed at improving oversight and operations within the police.
The development follows earlier leadership changes within the monitoring unit. Fakorede had been removed from his role and placed on leave before being reassigned.
His tenure had drawn criticism from rights groups over alleged misconduct. The controversies had raised concerns about accountability within the unit.
The latest action signals ongoing reforms in the police force. Authorities say the changes are designed to strengthen professionalism and restore confidence.
The reorganisation is expected to reshape investigative and monitoring duties. Attention now turns to how the new structure will perform.
