The Federal Government has temporarily opened Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, spanning 47 kilometres from the Ahmadu Bello Way junction to the Eleko village junction.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced the development on Friday, explaining that the temporary opening follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
Umahi said the move is intended to ease movement and improve traffic flow across Lagos during the festive season.
He noted that the partial reopening fulfils an earlier commitment made by the government. During his inspection of the project on 23 November 2025, the former Ebonyi State governor had promised that Section 1 would be completed and opened between 12 and 17 December 2025.
The opening is expected to significantly improve the difficult driving experience along the Lekki–Ajah axis, cutting travel time by more than half and lowering transport costs.
Umahi added that April 2026 remains the target for completing Section 1 and half of Section 2 for full commissioning, excluding the bridges, which fall under the Section 2 contract.
