Obi Criticizes NBC’s New Media Advisory
Peter Obi has criticised a recent advisory by the National Broadcasting Commission, warning of growing pressure on press freedom.
He said recent actions suggest the country is moving in a worrying direction. His reaction followed concerns about new broadcast guidelines ahead of the 2027 elections.
He described the development as troubling and warned that attempts to regulate media content could weaken democratic values.
According to him, the press plays a key role in holding leaders accountable. He added that restricting journalists or limiting opinions under regulatory measures could harm the system.
The commission had earlier cautioned broadcasters over rising ethical breaches, including unbalanced reporting and presenting opinions as facts.
It also warned that violations of the broadcasting code would attract sanctions.
The move is part of efforts to ensure fairness and professionalism as elections approach.
Obi said attention should be placed on pressing national issues such as insecurity and economic challenges rather than media control.
He expressed support for media organisations and called for stronger institutions built on transparency and accountability.
