Anambra State was thrown into another wave of grief and outrage this afternoon following the alleged killing of an innocent young woman by operatives of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s security outfit, popularly known as Operation Udo Ga Achi (Agụnechemba).
The Shocking Incident
According to eyewitness reports, the young woman was in the comfort of her bedroom when she was hit by a fatal bullet allegedly fired by members of the security outfit during an operation in the area. Residents expressed disbelief and anger, describing the act as “pure murder” and a gross abuse of the security mandate.
Videos and photos from the scene, now circulating online, have sparked widespread condemnation and renewed debates over the legitimacy and conduct of the Udo Ga Achi operatives.
A Pattern of Bloodshed Under Soludo’s Watch
This is not an isolated incident. Over the past months, Anambra has recorded multiple extrajudicial killings linked to the same security unit:
June 2025: A 12-year-old boy was allegedly shot dead near Biafra Market in Onitsha while sitting on a culvert on his way to use a public toilet. (Vanguard)
Late June 2025: A 17-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet fired by the outfit. Two operatives were later arrested, but the incident left a deep scar on the community. (Punch)
Earlier this year: Numerous complaints of harassment, brutality, and wrongful killings by the same outfit have surfaced, painting a disturbing picture of a security agency gone rogue.
The latest killing of the young woman underscores a dangerous trend of unchecked violence by those entrusted with public safety.
Who Are Operation Udo Ga Achi?
Launched under Governor Soludo’s Anambra Homeland Security initiative, Operation Udo Ga Achi was introduced as a local security outfit to complement police efforts in tackling crime, especially kidnapping, cultism, and violent robberies.
However, instead of being celebrated as a symbol of safety, the group has increasingly been associated with fear, harassment, and extrajudicial killings. Many now question whether their activities align with the purpose for which they were created.
Security agencies derive their legitimacy from the people they protect. The repeated incidents of wrongful killings have not only eroded public trust but also exposed lapses in training, discipline, and accountability within the outfit.
Experts warn that arming inadequately trained personnel without strict operational guidelines often results in abuse of power and avoidable tragedies.
The citizens of Anambra are united in their call for accountability, insisting that no security initiative should operate above the law.
Without urgent reforms, the outfit risks becoming a state sanctioned terror group, rather than the guardian of peace it was meant to be.
Enough Is Enough
The killing of an innocent young woman in her own bedroom is a grave human rights violation that cannot be swept under the rug. It adds to the growing list of innocent lives lost under questionable circumstances in Anambra State.
The government must act now to stop the bloodshed, reform its security apparatus, and ensure that justice is served. The people deserve a government that protects, not one that kills under the guise of protection.
