Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved a parcel of land for the construction of a permanent secretariat for the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, in the state.
He also ordered an investigation into reports that the statutory 10% check-off dues deducted from Abia civil servants’ salaries were not being remitted to the NLC national body.
Otti made this known on Wednesday when he received a delegation from the NLC national headquarters, led by its President, Joe Ajaero, at his office. The governor assured the NLC President that his administration remains worker-friendly, noting that 5,394 teachers had been employed under his government, while recruitment for 771 health workers was currently in progress.
He further informed Ajaero that his administration had approved the payment of financial entitlements to the next-of-kin of deceased Abia civil servants covering a period of the past 16 years.
Earlier in his remarks, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, appealed to the governor to allocate land for the construction of a befitting NLC secretariat in Abia State and to provide an operational vehicle for the state chapter of the union.
Ajaero commended Governor Otti for his strides in infrastructural development and his cordial relationship with organised labour. He also urged the Abia State NLC branch to remit the statutory 10% monthly check-off dues directly to the NLC national headquarters.
