Peter Obi has said Nigeria’s widespread poverty continues largely because citizens celebrate and protect politicians who misuse public resources instead of holding them accountable.

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party made the remark on Thursday in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria led by its national president, Obijuru Everest.

Obi said the country’s deep poverty problem is tied to poor leadership and a culture where leaders who drain public funds are still treated like heroes.

He said such behaviour weakens the demand for accountability and slows national development.

According to him, real progress will only come when Nigerians stop praising corrupt leaders and begin to demand honesty, responsibility, and better governance from those in power.
