Sheikh Ahmad Gumi Says He Will Advocate For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release If He Shows Remorse

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has reiterated his support for non-violent solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges, stating he would lead calls for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu if the activist shows genuine remorse for his actions.

Kanu, who was convicted on seven counts of terrorism by the Federal High Court in Abuja, has drawn widespread attention in recent months. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Gumi said that if Kanu expresses regret and advocates for peace, he would actively push for his pardon and amnesty.

“This Kanu, imprisoned for terrorism for urging attacks on our soldiers, if he now shows remorse and calls for peace, I will be at the forefront demanding his pardon and amnesty,” the cleric said.

Gumi referenced historical examples in Nigeria where amnesty was granted, including former President Shehu Shagari’s pardon of Odumegwu Ojukwu and Umaru Yar’Adua’s amnesty to Niger Delta militants who had committed acts of terrorism.

The cleric, who has consistently promoted non-kinetic approaches to insecurity—especially in northern Nigeria—argued that military solutions alone are insufficient. “Even America could not succeed in Afghanistan, and Israel struggled in a small strip of land. Our army is not designed for guerrilla warfare; no army is,” he said.

He added that some groups, such as Fulani herdsmen, have shown willingness to pursue peace. “When called for peace, they respond, though sometimes armed. Can you call IPOB for peace? Can you call Boko Haram? Some leaders have tried, but it becomes more difficult over time. Anyone inclined toward peace, I stand with them,” Gumi said.

His comments come as insecurity continues to escalate across the country, with recent mass abductions of schoolchildren and worshippers raising serious concerns. While President Bola Tinubu has ordered security forces to pursue the perpetrators, opposition figures have criticized the government’s response as inadequate.
