Senate Pushes FG To Halt Political Campaign
Nigeria’s Senate has urged the Federal Government to consider suspending political activities in parts of the North as insecurity worsens, with Abdul Ningi raising the alarm during plenary.
He warned that ongoing violence, especially in states like Borno State, Plateau State, Benue State and others, could disrupt normal governance and electoral preparations if not urgently addressed.
The call comes amid renewed attacks by Boko Haram, including assaults on military bases and the abduction of civilians.
Lawmakers expressed concern that the rising violence is reversing gains made in recent counter-insurgency efforts.
The Senate also asked security agencies to intensify operations to secure the release of over 400 women, children and elderly persons reportedly held by insurgents in Borno since late March.
In addition, lawmakers urged military authorities to review operational strategies, improve equipment, and investigate claims of civilian harm during operations.
They also called on communities to support security forces with timely information.
The development highlights growing anxiety across the country as attacks persist, with calls for tougher action to prevent further escalation ahead of political activities linked to the 2027 elections.
