Super Eagles Coach, Chelle Salary Sparks Concern
Former Super Eagles midfielder Garba Lawal has questioned Nigeria’s ability to maintain Éric Chelle’s reported $100,000 monthly salary after the coach signed a new contract that keeps him in charge until 2030.
The deal also gives him responsibility for the national U23 team.
Chelle’s previous contract earned him $50,000 per month and required him to pay his assistants.
Under the new agreement, the Nigeria Football Federation will now cover the wages of his backroom staff while his monthly pay doubles.
Lawal welcomed the extension but warned that sustaining such a financial commitment could become difficult.
He said Chelle’s role with the U23 side could also help identify players capable of moving into the senior national team.
Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George also advised against giving Chelle both jobs, saying the senior team alone demands full attention.
He urged the authorities to allow other Nigerian coaches handle the Olympic team instead.
