Fuji maestro Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere was caught in a violent disruption during a burial ceremony in Okitipupa, Ondo State, after suspected thugs stormed the venue and attacked members of his band.

The incident unfolded on Friday at the Government Field, where Obesere had been scheduled to entertain guests. Witnesses said the atmosphere shifted suddenly when a group of known troublemakers forced their way in and confronted the musician’s crew.

In the chaos that followed, one of Obesere’s band members was reportedly stabbed while trying to fend off the attackers. His condition had not been confirmed at the time of the incident.

Guests fled in panic as the disruption intensified. An attendee, Bosede Akinyemi, described the scene as disorderly and embarrassing, recalling how the thugs smashed equipment and assaulted members of the band.

“I was at the party. It was a very shameful act as a group of boys—known thugs in the community—caused trouble. They attacked Obesere and his band while they were performing. They descended on some of his boys and destroyed his musical equipment,” she said.

The chairman of Okitipupa Local Government, Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin, condemned the attack, saying it did not represent the values of the community. He expressed disappointment over the treatment of the singer and his team and promised to look into the matter to prevent a repeat.

He also said he would reach out personally to Obesere to convey the community’s regret over the incident.
