President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area, Ogun State, marking a significant boost for the state’s coastal economy.

Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the development on Thursday while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, and senior officers during a courtesy visit to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor also revealed that the President has authorized the immediate start of the Olokola Deep Seaport project in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, ending years of delays and anticipation for the multibillion-dollar infrastructure.

Abiodun emphasized that both projects are priorities for President Tinubu. While the Olokola Deep Seaport is expected to ease congestion at Lagos ports, commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island is aimed at creating economic opportunities and empowering residents of coastal communities.

“Mr President has approved the start of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island, and you will soon see significant activity there. Our Olokola Port project, which has been in the pipeline for years, is now back on track. I sincerely thank Mr President, as this initiative is entirely his,” the governor said.

He added that the President has directed that construction of the port should be well underway by next year. The seaport, to be named the Blue Marine Economic Zone, is expected to serve as a strategic coastal hub and provide an alternative logistics corridor to relieve pressure on Lagos ports.

The governor also commended the Nigerian Navy for setting up a Forward Operations Base at Tongeji Island, highlighting that the naval presence will help prevent infiltration from the Republic of Benin and protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Abiodun said his administration is working to provide basic amenities to island residents to support improved living standards and emerging economic activities. He also praised the Navy’s contribution to Ogun State’s security, noting that collaboration among security agencies has helped maintain peace in the state.

Describing Rear Admiral Mustapha as a highly skilled and experienced officer, the governor expressed confidence that Ogun State would benefit from enhanced security and development under his leadership.

“We are glad that someone with your background, training, and experience is in this role. You are truly a round peg in a round hole,” he said.
