US Plans Aid Cut Over Nigeria Insecurity
The United States is considering cutting half of its aid to Nigeria under a new proposal linking support to progress on security and civilian safety.
The move comes from the U.S. House Appropriations Committee as part of its 2027 spending bill, driven by concern over ongoing violence.
The plan says Nigeria must show clear action in tackling insecurity, protecting citizens, and prosecuting offenders before 50 per cent of the aid is released.
Lawmakers tied the conditions to continued attacks by armed groups and rising threats to vulnerable communities across the country.
The proposal also urges stronger support for displaced persons and rebuilding of affected areas, while calling for proper investigations into violent incidents.
It adds a funding rule that would require Nigeria to match U.S. support, increasing financial pressure on the government.
The bill is not yet law and still needs approval from Congress and the U.S. president.
Nigerian authorities have argued that insecurity is complex and not driven by religious issues, but the move shows a tougher stance that could affect ties between both countries.
