Worker’s Group Faults Sowore’s N200m Bail
The Workers and Youth Solidarity Network has criticised the N200 million bail granted to Omoyele Sowore, saying the conditions attached to his release are too harsh.
The group argued that the requirements appear to make it difficult for the activist to regain his freedom despite the court granting bail.
The Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Sowore to provide two sureties, including a traditional ruler from his community and a property owner in the Federal Capital Territory.
The court also directed him to surrender his passport while the case continues.
WYSN said the bail terms go against the principle that bail should not become a form of punishment before a verdict is reached.
The organisation claimed the prosecution was politically motivated and aimed at silencing a vocal critic of the government.
The group called for the bail conditions to be reviewed and the case against Sowore to be withdrawn. It also urged workers, students and civil society groups to continue defending democratic rights and freedom of expression.
