ADC Leadership Case Faces New Court Delay
A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned indefinitely the suit challenging the leadership of the African Democratic Congress under former Senate President David Mark.
Justice Emeka Nwite said the delay became necessary after the plaintiff, Nafiu Bala Gombe, requested that the matter be transferred to another judge.
The court explained that parties must first provide the certified true copy of the recent Supreme Court judgment linked to the case.
Justice Nwite also said the plaintiff failed to serve the defendants with the letter sent to the Chief Judge seeking reassignment of the matter, making it impossible for the court to act immediately.
Lawyers representing the defendants opposed the transfer request and accused the plaintiff of attempting to frustrate the accelerated hearing earlier ordered by higher courts.
Counsel to the ADC described the move as an ambush, while other defence lawyers questioned the timing of the application.
Meanwhile, the ADC alleged that forces linked to the Federal Government were trying to influence the judiciary in the ongoing leadership dispute.
The party claimed the request for reassignment reflected attempts to shop for a favourable judge, insisting that the judiciary must remain free from political pressure and interference.
