ADC Tackles Enugu Government Over Demolition Row
The African Democratic Congress in Enugu State has criticised the administration of Governor Peter Mbah over its response to comments made by the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Godfrey Onah.
The opposition party urged the government to address the concerns raised by the cleric rather than focus on attacking him.
The dispute followed the bishop’s criticism of the demolition of shops at Ogige Market in Nsukka and concerns about the development of communities across the Nsukka zone.
The ADC argued that many affected traders legally obtained their shops through previous government allocations and were left struggling after losing their businesses without adequate support.
According to the party, the main issue is the impact of the demolition on traders and their families, not the government’s urban renewal plans.
It maintained that many residents suffered financial hardship after the exercise and questioned the decision to remove a major commercial hub that supported thousands of livelihoods.
The ADC also defended Bishop Onah’s right to speak on public matters, describing his remarks as part of his responsibility as a religious and community leader.
The party said democratic governance requires tolerance of criticism and called on the state government to focus on addressing public concerns rather than engaging in disputes with critics.
