Atiku Warns Against Campaign Ban In Some States
In Nigeria, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concern over plans to suspend political campaigns in parts of the North.
Reports say the Senate is considering the move in states like Borno, Benue, and Plateau due to rising insecurity. Atiku warned on Sunday that such action could affect citizens’ rights.
He said the issue comes at a time of growing fear and tension.
He argued that stopping campaigns would weaken democratic participation and deny people a voice. According to him, insecurity should not be used as a reason to limit political activity.
Atiku also called on Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, and the government of Bola Tinubu to clarify their stance. He said authorities must assure Nigerians that no region will be left out.
He stressed that both safety and political rights should be protected at the same time. He urged leaders to act responsibly in handling the situation.
The debate follows a proposal by Senator Abdul Ningi, who suggested halting political activities in affected states. The call came amid renewed attacks linked to insurgency and banditry in the region.
