Buhari Named In Emefiele’s $6.2m Fraud Trial
Fresh claims emerged on Friday at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja as President Bola Tinubu’s special investigator on the Central Bank of Nigeria, Jim Obazee, told the court that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, should also have faced prosecution over the alleged $6.2 million fraud linked to former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele.
Obazee, who testified for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said the disputed payment involved documents said to have authorised the release of the funds for foreign election observers.
He noted that Mustapha later denied involvement and claimed the documents connected to the transaction were forged.
While being questioned by Emefiele’s lawyer, the investigator admitted that no money was recovered from the former CBN governor and that investigators found no evidence the funds entered his personal account.
He, however, maintained that Emefiele should have been aware of the transaction through the bank’s internal control system.
The witness also told the court that President Tinubu instructed him in December 2023 to investigate the matter and prepare possible charges.
After hearing the testimony, the court fixed October 20 for the continuation of the trial.
