INEC Extends Nationwide Voter Registration
The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise by two weeks, allowing more eligible Nigerians to register before future elections.
The exercise, which was due to end on July 10, will now close on July 24, 2026.
The commission also unveiled a new online self-service platform for first-time voters. From July 8, eligible Nigerians will be able to begin and complete their registration, including biometric capture, on their personal devices through the commission’s CVR portal without visiting an INEC office.
INEC said the decision followed a review of the exercise and feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders.
It added that the extension is aimed at giving more qualified citizens the chance to join the National Register of Voters.
The electoral body said the online system includes identity verification, biometric checks and other security measures to protect the voter register.
It urged those yet to register to use both the extended deadline and the new digital option.
