Court Fast Tracks Coup Trial, Tribunal Resumes May
The Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday moved to speed up proceedings in a case involving six suspects accused of plotting against the government of Bola Tinubu.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik fixed April 29, April 30, May 4 and May 5 for the start of trial and consideration of bail requests, signalling urgency around the matter.
The defendants, including Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, Erasmus Ochegobia Victor and others, are facing 13 charges such as treason, terrorism and money laundering.
They all pleaded not guilty, setting the stage for a full trial as the court prepares to hear evidence.
During the session, the Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi, told the court that the prosecution was ready with witnesses.
Some defence lawyers raised concerns about limited time to prepare, while one pushed for bail to be heard first, but the court ruled that trial must begin before bail issues.
The judge directed all parties to align on the scheduled dates to ensure quick progress.
At the same time, a separate military court process involving serving officers linked to the case is set to continue in early May, showing the wide reach of the ongoing investigation.
