The Federal Government of Nigeria has stepped in to support airlines as rising Jet A1 fuel prices threaten flight operations across the country.

At a meeting in Abuja, authorities agreed to suspend the collection of certain charges from airlines to reduce their financial burden.

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, said operators had warned of a possible shutdown due to soaring fuel costs.

He noted that discussions involved airline representatives and regulators, with plans to seek approval from Bola Ahmed Tinubu for debt relief measures.

The government is also considering discounts on debts owed to agencies such as Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, and Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

A committee is expected to review taxes and levies on domestic tickets as part of broader reforms.

Officials from the petroleum sector confirmed ongoing talks with fuel marketers to address pricing concerns.

Airline operators say the current cost of Jet A1 fuel is too high compared to crude oil trends, raising fears over the sustainability of flight operations if no lasting solution is reached.
