FG Moves To End JSS, SSS Seperation
The Federal Government has announced plans to end the separation of Junior Secondary Schools and Senior Secondary Schools after discovering that more than 20 million pupils leave school before reaching the senior level.
Education Minister Tunji Alausa revealed the decision on Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the UBEC Ministerial Implementation and Monitoring Committee.
Alausa said the current arrangement has failed because the number of junior secondary schools is far lower than primary schools, creating overcrowded classrooms and limiting access for many children.
He added that some senior secondary schools remain underused while millions of pupils never make the transition.
The minister said the proposal to end the policy will be presented at the next meeting of the National Council on Education. He maintained that the reform is aimed at improving access to education and ensuring more Nigerian children remain in school.
Alausa also launched a committee to monitor UBEC-funded Smart Schools, Bilingual Schools and Alternative Schools. He said many completed projects have not started operations and directed the committee to ensure they are completed, handed over to states and opened to learners.
