FG Seeks South Africa Compensation Over Attacks
President Bola Tinubu’s administration will seek compensation from the South African government for Nigerian-owned businesses and properties destroyed during repeated xenophobic attacks.
The move comes as Abuja steps up efforts to protect its citizens and address years of losses suffered by Nigerians living in South Africa.
The Federal Government said the planned demand follows reports of renewed attacks on Nigerians and their investments, with many victims losing shops, businesses and other valuable property.
Officials believe those affected deserve justice and proper compensation for their losses.
The decision forms part of wider diplomatic efforts between both countries as Nigeria continues engaging South African authorities over the safety of its citizens.
Government officials are also working to support Nigerians returning home through the ongoing evacuation exercise.
Abuja maintained that attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants cannot continue without consequences.
The government said it would pursue every lawful option to ensure affected citizens receive compensation while also pressing for stronger protection of Nigerians living in South Africa.
