FG Plans Green Tax On Big Engines
The Federal Government has announced a new “green tax” set to begin on July 1, 2026, targeting vehicles with engines of 2,000cc and above.
The policy is part of broader fiscal measures aimed at reducing emissions and promoting cleaner transport options across the country.
Under the plan, owners of high-capacity vehicles will pay an extra levy ranging from 2 to 4 percent.
The tax is designed to discourage the use of fuel-heavy cars and push motorists toward more environmentally friendly alternatives.
Smaller vehicles, mass transit systems, and electric cars will not be affected by the new charge.
Officials say this exemption is meant to support affordable transport and encourage a shift to cleaner energy solutions.
The move signals a growing focus on climate concerns in Nigeria’s economic policies, with authorities hoping the tax will gradually reshape vehicle choices and reduce pollution levels.
