Residents of Tombo Council Ward in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State have been thrown into tension following the killing of a former councillor, Mr Atindiga Tsebee, who was ambushed and shot dead by suspected armed herdsmen.
The tragic incident reportedly happened over the weekend along the Ayilamo–Anyiin road near Tsukwa Village, while the deceased was on his way back from a security meeting organised to address the growing insecurity and frequent attacks in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants laid an ambush for the vehicle in which the victim was travelling and opened fire on it.
“The vehicle belonged to another community leader, Zaki Terngu Iorhuna.
“They were returning from a security meeting to discuss the spate of attacks in the communities when the armed herdsmen ambushed and opened fire on them, killing Tsebee on the spot,” the source said.
The assault has left the community in mourning and increased tension over the resurgence of violent attacks.
Reports indicate that many residents have fled the community due to fears of further assaults, while local leaders have called for a stronger military presence to avert additional bloodshed in the region.
At the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, for confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful.
