ICPC Opposes El Rufai New Bail Application
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has opposed a fresh bail request filed by former Kaduna governor Nasir El Rufai at the Kaduna State High Court.
The matter came up on Tuesday, where both sides informed the court of new filings. The case continues as legal arguments over his release deepen.
During the hearing, defence counsel said a new bail application had been filed and served, stressing the urgency of his client’s freedom.
However, ICPC’s lawyer told the court he had just received additional documents and needed time to review them. This led the court to fix May 13, 2026, for hearing of the application.
The court had earlier refused bail, citing concerns raised by the prosecution. These included possible flight risk, alleged obstruction during arrest, and fears of interference with witnesses.
The judge also noted that some claims by the defence were not backed with evidence.
Despite the earlier ruling, the defence returned with a new application, which the ICPC has challenged.
The agency maintained its position, saying it remains focused on ensuring the case proceeds in line with the law.
