INEC Unveils Massive NYSC Election Plan
The Independent National Electoral Commission has revealed plans to deploy more than 1.4 million National Youth Service Corps members for the 2027 general elections across Nigeria.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a visit to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja on Monday as preparations for the polls gather pace.
According to the commission, corps members will serve as a major part of the election workforce during both the presidential and governorship elections scheduled for January and February 2027.
INEC said the scheme remains one of the strongest pillars supporting Nigeria’s electoral process since the return to democracy in 1999.
Amupitan explained that over 70 per cent of the ad hoc officials used during the 2023 elections came from corps members and student volunteers.
He noted that many of them handled sensitive duties in polling units across difficult terrains while also operating the BVAS machines used for voter accreditation.
The INEC chairman assured that better welfare, security and insurance arrangements would be provided for corps members participating in the elections.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, also pledged continued support, adding that incoming corps members are more digitally skilled and prepared for modern election duties.
