JAMB Changes Admission Pattern
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced that Mathematics will no longer be compulsory for admission into several university courses in Nigeria.
The new position is expected to affect candidates applying for programmes that do not require advanced numerical knowledge.
The decision is aimed at making admission requirements more flexible for students seeking courses in arts, humanities and some social science fields.
Education stakeholders said the adjustment could reduce pressure on candidates who struggle with Mathematics but perform strongly in other subjects.
JAMB explained that universities would still determine subject combinations based on the nature of each course.
Science, engineering, technology and other specialised programmes will continue to require Mathematics as part of their admission conditions.
The development has already sparked conversations among students, parents and school owners across the country, with many describing it as a move that could widen access to higher education while allowing institutions to focus more on course-specific requirements.
