A mild scene unfolded at the National Assembly on Wednesday when representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) abruptly walked out during an interaction with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, was not present at the session and delegated a Director, Mufutau Bello, to represent him.
The misunderstanding began when Bello insisted that journalists should leave the meeting room, arguing that the documents he intended to present contained sensitive information.
However, the Committee rejected the request, maintaining that its proceedings were public and that it had constitutional authority to determine the conduct of its sittings.
In a sudden and dramatic reaction, the JAMB representative became visibly irritated, instructed his team to leave, and then walked out of the meeting, leaving the lawmakers in shock.
Angered by this action, the Committee directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the JAMB officials, but they had already exited the National Assembly premises.
The Committee has now ordered JAMB to ensure that the Registrar appears in person, along with his management team, by Tuesday next week to submit all the required documents.
It also cautioned that failure to comply could result in the issuance of a warrant of arrest.
