Jonathan Approved For 2027 Election As Turaki PDP Celebrates
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is qualified to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The decision followed a legal challenge seeking to stop his participation, which was dismissed by the court.
Justice Peter Lifu also imposed fines on the plaintiff for filing what the court described as an improper case.
The case was brought by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who argued that Jonathan was no longer eligible due to his previous time in office.
The court rejected the argument, stating that earlier rulings had already confirmed his eligibility. It also ordered the plaintiff to pay N20 million to Jonathan and N1 million to the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The court maintained that Jonathan’s past service as president, including completing Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s term and winning the 2011 election, did not bar him from another attempt.
It further described the case as an abuse of court process and affirmed that his eligibility remained valid under existing legal decisions.
The ruling has drawn attention within political circles as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
Jonathan has yet to confirm if he will join the race, though discussions around his possible candidacy continue across party lines and political groups.
