Lagos Residents Brase For Higher Tariffs
Residents in Lagos may soon face higher electricity tariffs after the Lagos State Government ruled out subsidising power costs for consumers under its emerging electricity market structure.
The development follows the state’s ongoing push to expand independent power generation and off-grid electricity projects after the new Electricity Act transferred more regulatory powers to states.
Officials said the government would instead focus on attracting private investment and improving electricity supply rather than using public funds to reduce consumer tariffs.
The state argued that subsidies are difficult to sustain and could discourage long-term investment in the power sector.
The decision is expected to affect households and businesses already battling rising living costs and unstable electricity supply.
While the government insists improved power generation and distribution will eventually benefit residents, concerns are growing over the possible impact of higher tariffs on small businesses and low-income families.
Lagos has recently approved several off-grid and metering operators as part of plans to strengthen electricity access across the state.
Authorities believe the reforms will create a more reliable power system, though many residents are now bracing for increased electricity bills in the coming months.
