APC Consensus Plan Sparks Nationwide Tension
Across Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress is pushing a consensus method to pick candidates for the 2027 elections, and it is stirring anger within the party.
Many aspirants say they are being pushed aside, while others complain about unfair decisions and rising costs of nomination forms. These issues are creating cracks that could affect party unity.
The tension became clear after former Cross River governor Ben Ayade stepped down from a senate race following pressure linked to the presidency.
Similar complaints are spreading in different states, where party leaders are accused of favouring certain candidates. Some members fear this approach may lead to protests or even members working against the party.
Party leaders insist the consensus method is allowed under the law and still involves voting at the ward level. They argue that any objection can lead to full primaries.
However, many stakeholders believe the process is being controlled by a few powerful figures, leaving others without a fair chance to compete.
At the same time, protests, court cases and party disputes are adding to the tension in the political space.
Demonstrators have raised concerns about interference in institutions, while opposition parties battle legal challenges.
With alliances shifting and disagreements growing, the road to the 2027 elections is already heating up.
