NDC Sets New Rule For Presidency
The Nigeria Democratic Congress has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria as the party moves to reshape its strategy ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached during high-level consultations by party leaders seeking to calm regional tensions and strengthen internal unity before the campaign season begins.
The party also approved a single four-year tenure for whoever emerges as its presidential candidate.
Leaders of the NDC said the move was designed to promote fairness, balance power between regions and reduce fears of long-term political dominance by any bloc within the country.
The development comes amid rising political activity within the opposition following the arrival of major figures into the party.
The NDC has recently gained attention after attracting former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into its fold ahead of the 2027 elections.
Party insiders believe zoning the ticket to the South and limiting the tenure to one term could help attract wider national support and reduce internal disputes over power rotation.
The decision is already adding fresh momentum to opposition talks as political alignments continue to shift across the country.
