The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the federal government.
In a letter to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, the unions gave the government one week to address their outstanding labour demands or face a nationwide shutdown of university services.
The letter, signed by NASU General Secretary Peter Adeyemi and SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim, was made public on Monday in Abuja.
Among their key demands are the payment of ₦50 billion in earned allowances, settlement of withheld salaries, arrears from the approved 25/35 percent salary increment, and the completion of the long-delayed renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement.
The unions accused the government of marginalizing their members in universities and excluding staff of inter-university centres from the ₦50 billion allowance allocation.
They demanded the immediate payment of all arrears and the implementation of the salary increment, stressing that the government’s repeated assurances had not been honoured.
“Despite assurances, nothing concrete has been done to pay our members,” they said.
They also faulted the government for excluding non-teaching unions from the renegotiation process, describing the delay as unjust and unacceptable.
“In light of persistent neglect, we serve a seven-day notice effective September 15, 2025. Failure to act will trigger industrial actions, including strikes,” the unions warned.
