The Niger State Police Command has deployed a tactical response team to rescue the students kidnapped from St. Mary’s Private Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area.
In a statement issued in Minna on Friday, the Police Spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the attack happened around 2 a.m. when armed bandits stormed the school hostel and took the students away.
He explained that police tactical units, supported by the military and other security agencies, have been dispatched to the area and are currently combing nearby forests in search of the victims.
Abiodun added that the Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, has assured the public that every effort is being made to secure the safe return of the abducted students.
He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives as the rescue mission progresses.
Abiodun also noted that necessary measures would be taken against the school management for allegedly disregarding the state government’s earlier directive ordering the closure of schools in the area due to security concerns.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), gunmen attacked the school and abducted an unspecified number of students and staff members.
A resident of Agwara, who spoke anonymously, told NAN that the school is located about eight kilometres from Agwara town along the Agwara-Borgu Road.
